This course can be combined with the Open Creation Workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Every Tuesday from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Enrollment all year round. On a free schedule
This course centers around the creation of one or more sketchbooks. We will emphasize the contrast between left and right pages, blend various styles—from abstraction to figuration—and experiment with a range of techniques. Participants will explore drawing and painting, finger drawing, cutting, collage, monotypes, printing, overpainting photocopies, ink stains, pen work, tracing with carbon paper, and dipping. In essence, we’re here to have a great time!
Feel free to join the ‘Sketchbooks’ group I’ve set up on Facebook: link

Create a storytelling notebook that focuses on crafting a narrative through images, complemented by select cut-out texts. You can begin with your own photographs or magazine clippings.
This project is not a comic strip or an illustrated novel; instead, it consists of a series of pages organized to unfold a story. While black and white will dominate, the occasional use of a second color can help establish a cohesive theme. The images should be viewed collectively and sequentially, forming a visual narrative that is ultimately bound together like a notebook.

Create a ‘Land Art’ notebook using natural materials such as leaves, moss, twigs, pebbles, and pieces of wood. You’ll explore a variety of techniques, including soaking, hammering plants to extract their juices with iron oxide, painting over photocopies, making stencils, tracing with carbon paper, leaf printing, monotyping, and using tissue paper with wallpaper paste, along with many other engaging and educational exercises.
Additionally, you can choose to create a handmade bound notebook. While ready-made notebooks are available, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to craft and bind your own. Various binding techniques will be covered, including Japanese stitching, accordion stitching, criss-cross stitching, Coptic stitching, as well as using staples and clips.

Phil will give you tips and tricks to help you achieve the best results.
He'll show you how to turn your ideas into reality using pictorial research. He inspires you with artists' books, reproductions of works of art, and exhibitions to visit. He explains the various stages of a work step-by-step. No headaches, just the pleasure of creation.

I had the great pleasure to follow Phil's classes and seminars, which truly gave me a boost in my artistic journey. Apart from being an extremely talented artist, he truly acts as a helper/advisor rather than a teacher, respecting your own way of seeing art and giving you pertinent advice when requested or needed. Whatever medium or style you like for your art, I am certain that Phil will be a great addition to it. I warmly recommend him!
Techniques and themes
Choose your theme & choose your technique: Drawing, painting, pastels, pencils, watercolor...

Portraiture, Anatomy, and the Human Figure
Successful portraiture requires careful observation as well as quality execution.
The crucial steps in creating a successful portrait from a photo are:
- Layout
- Proportions between mouth, eyes, nose, ears and hair
- Basic and detailed sketches
- Contrast and coherence between each grey value
- Transitions between shadow zones
- Coloring Working in reverse with the left hand will encourage a different approach.

Landscape, Nature and Perspective
To achieve success when painting or drawing a landscape, it is essential to consider factors such as perspective, angle of view, lighting, and framing.
The emphasis will be on the creative process of landscape painting: observing details, outlining shapes, making a basic sketch, adding shadows and textures, and rendering the effects of light and shadow. For painters, this will involve evaluating colours, studying blends and working on layers with different tools.

Art research and abstraction
When it comes to research, the marvellous is often where you least expect it, which makes it all the more exciting when you discover it.
The workshop will help you to develop your creativity. You will experiment with dips, monotypes, stencils, photocopier make-up and alterations to paper or painted subjects by scraping, sanding, overpainting, applying an oil glaze and cutting and gluing. You will experiment with various tools, including spatulas, knives, brushes, spalters and improvised tools such as rope, thread, sponges and sandpaper.
